Smoking as a habit is very hard to break. With an active social life the temptation
to smoke is greater because there is a need to counterbalance the alcohol intake.
The other end of the scale is where people form the habit out of boredom and
out of loneliness. Once they have started they see no reason to stop smoking.
The important thing is not to start smoking in the first place.
One of the things that attract people to smoking
pipes and cigarettes is the need to use their hands and fingers in a hand
to mouth
action that is instilled
upon us from birth. We need that action to eat and drink. We don’t need
it to put drugs and other alien products into our bodies the body does not
need. Some people need the constant action of the jaw moving so they chew tobacco
and spit out the excess nicotine. Any chewing action causes saliva to be produced
so there is a build up in the mouth, hence the need to spit.
At some point in most people’s life they
will come across a person who uses tobacco in one of the many ways. These
people are
addicted to the drug.
What you will need to do is to resist the initial efforts of these people to
get you addicted as well.
Some of the tips to resist the temptation to smoke are;
1. Say no! Not always an easy thing to do because friends can be so persuasive.
2. Change friends.
3. Do not go into rooms, restaurants or drinking places where they allow smoking.
4. Carry a toothbrush and paste and clean your teeth every time you get the
temptation.
5. Do something really physical that requires all your attention (and breathe).
6. When others around you are drinking alcohol, you drink soft drinks. The
need for smoking will diminish as you no longer need the stimulant.
7. Do not carry enough money to buy cigarettes.
8. If you feel the temptation, try acupuncture.
9. Hypnosis is commonly used to stop and prevent smoking.
10. Ask those around you to quit. Your reason
is because you don’t want
to see them die from smoking induced illnesses. If they stop then you will
probably never start.
11. Join a club which does not allow smoking and does activities you like.
12. A mind lulled into a comfortable atmosphere is relaxed and more susceptible
to the pull of smoking through lack of stimulation. Always keep an active mind.
13. Every time someone gives or offers you a cigarette, take it and crush
it before you smoke it. That person will soon stop offering them.
14. If a room has smoke in it open the window or go into another.
15. Passive smoking will increase your need for nicotine so avoid smoke filled
areas or people who smoke near you.
16. Imagine all those things you could buy if you did not spend your money
on tobacco.
17. Each week you resist smoking give your self a non smoking reward.
18. Avoid the scenarios which urge you to smoke. Boredom, stuck in traffic,
having a coffee break, leaving a no smoking building. In these situations try
something else like a piece of gum or a fruit or turn up the music.
19. Write down your feelings when you get the urge. Make a list of anything
and improve it.
20. Drink water through a straw when the urge takes you. The feeling will
soon go away.
21. Read books that are too heavy or big for one hand. You will need both
to read it and then cannot smoke.
22. Keep an active mind. Devise lists of things you want to do or make. Then
do them with the money you have saved.
23. Use a nicotine replacement program and reduce your need through a slowly
reducing input until you no longer need it.
24. Avoid stressful situations. If you suffer from stress analyze it to find
out the causes then change them if you can.
25. Read a newspaper when you have a break or after a meal.
26. Be positive. You can quit and you don’t
have to start. Say No.
